The UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) on August 5 featured a series of side events. The meetings covered a wide range of issues, from trade and transport to digital technologies, with the overall goal of finding comprehensive solutions for the sustainable development of these countries.

Consultations on the WTO Work Programme

The meeting discussed how the World Trade Organization (WTO) Work Programme helps LLDCs integrate into the global trading system. Participants reviewed the successes and challenges associated with the diversification of their economies. The WTO Programme aims to create an open and stable trading system by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and promoting cross-border cooperation.

Digital Corridors and UN Standards

The event, organised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, was dedicated to the development of digital transport corridors. Innovative approaches to overcoming geographical barriers were discussed. Particular attention was paid to the use of UN standards, such as digital technologies and a single legal framework for information exchange, which speeds up customs procedures and reduces costs. Examples of successful solutions: UN/CEFACT, eTIR and eCMR.

Forum on the ways of transformation of the development of the LLDCs

The forum, organized by the United Nations Development Programme, provided a platform for discussing strategic approaches to the development of LLDCs. Participants concluded that trade, regional integration and inclusion in global value chains are key drivers of sustainable development. The importance of infrastructure, policies and institutional capacity in creating a favourable investment climate was emphasized.

Sustainable Partnership Meeting

The meeting discussed the role of cooperation between governments, the private sector and international organizations. Examples of successful interactions that stimulate investment and economic diversification were given. Participants emphasized that solidarity and joint efforts are the basis for transforming the potential of LLDCs into real socio-economic development.

Quality Policy: Systemic Transition

The event, organized by UNIDO, focused on the impact of quality policies on the competitiveness and sustainability of LLDCs. It was noted that the introduction of international quality standards helps countries gain access to new markets and stimulates the production of high-tech products. Simplification of trade procedures and standards strengthens transit trade, and successful implementation of these policies increases investor and consumer confidence.

Infrastructure and regional security

One of the meetings discussed the relationship between transport infrastructure and regional security. It was noted that the development of transport corridors not only stimulates economic growth, but also helps to strengthen trust relations. Participants considered strategies for creating cost-effective transit corridors that will help reduce trade costs and increase the competitiveness of LLDCs.

FAO meeting on digital public goods

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a session on the role of digital technologies in agriculture. It discussed how accessible software, data and standards can transform the sector, improve food security and livelihoods. This requires investment in broadband, digital networks and energy infrastructure.

LLDCs rights and maritime law

The conference discussed the importance of implementing the rights of LLDCs enshrined in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Participants exchanged views on the right to transit goods through the territories of coastal states and access to marine resources. Ways to overcome infrastructure constraints and achieve bilateral agreements were proposed.

Trade, cooperatin and value chains

Another FAO meeting was devoted to sustainable trade development, regional cooperation and tariff formation chains. Participants emphasized that sustainable trade growth requires diversification of the economy and exports. The issue of high costs associated with transit payments, which significantly increase the final price of goods, was raised. Ways of mutually beneficial cooperation and implementation of the right to free transit of goods were discussed.

Challenges and Opportunities of the LLDCs in the Field of Exports

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) held a session to discuss exports and economic diversification of LLDCs. The importance of supporting regional cooperation and international financial institutions was noted. Participants shared experiences in digitalizing trade operations and attracting investment, which is key to sustainable global economic growth.

Overall, these events demonstrated a deep understanding of the problems of LLDCs and the commitment of the international community to finding practical and innovative solutions for their sustainable development.
