The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) is considering increasing the number of teams at the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams.
The proposal was put forward by a representative of Uruguay, who noted that such an expansion could be a symbolic gesture in honor of the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in 1930. It was Uruguay that hosted the World Cup in 1930 and will be one of the hosts of the tournament a hundred years later.
According to the American daily newspaper The New York Times, FIFA President Gianni Infantino responded positively to this idea, calling it interesting and stating the need for further analysis.
The reaction of other members of the FIFA Council was mixed. According to some experts, expanding the tournament to 64 teams could lead to an increase in the number of matches and, accordingly, to additional financial income. It could also create logistical difficulties. The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be held on three continents: Europe (Spain and Portugal), Africa (Morocco) and South America (Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina), making it unique in the history of the tournament.
