Turkmenistan took part in the 33rd session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Assembly held in Paris, where it confirmed its readiness to develop international cooperation for the protection of marine ecosystems and presented an initiative to create a regional environmental platform for the Caspian Sea. This was reported by the newspaper «Нейтральный Туркменистан».

The country’s delegation included representatives from the Caspian Sea Institute, Turkmenistan’s permanent delegation to UNESCO, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the session, participants discussed issues related to monitoring of water areas and coastal territories, forecasting the impact of climate change on ocean currents, protecting rare marine species, and developing early warning systems.

The IOC UNESCO session took place ahead of Caspian Day, celebrated on August 12. The UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, marking its 65th anniversary this year, coordinates international efforts for ocean research and sustainable use of marine resources.
